This course consists in equipping with both MPH and MSc EPI students with skills on effective management of public health emergencies (disasters). It will provide you not only with a solid theoretical and conceptual understanding of Disaster risk management (DRM), but also takes you through the practical application of the concept and practices in different settings.

At the end of this course, students should be able:

1. To understand the key concepts and terminologies related to disasters and the classification

2. To be equipped with knowledge of the key public health consequences of disasters and demonstrate how the disaster management cycle can be used to address these consequences

3. To be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to respond promptly to outbreaks of disease, so as to prevent spread of infection and reduce deaths

4. To describe the key considerations in handling Mass Casualty Incidents, and communication processes in a disaster situation

5. To understand the key issues involved in setting up a response mechanism for complex emergencies and how to conduct a rapid needs assessment for a given disaster situation.
6. Understand floods as well as disaster management during floods 
7. Understand earthquakes as well as disaster management actions during these events
8. Understand droughts as well as disaster management actions during droughts
9. Understand fire, their categories and disaster management actions during fire
10. Understand the policy framework for disaster management 
There will be a good assignment about one district disaster hazard vulnerability analyis in teams of two. This will make students really apply all gained skills in a real situation, and everybody will work on a well known district in Rwanda.
