This module constitutes the backdrop to the problems and challenges of development. Due to the fact that development is a comprehensive process involving economic, social and environmental changes, the course will take an interdisciplinary approach. It is an attempt to explain some complex relationships among various aspects of development including population growth, economic growth and basics Rwandan economy.

Module Description 

GIS (Geographic Information System): is computer assisted system with for collecting, storing, retrieving at will, transforming and displaying spatial data from the real world for a particular set of purpose. It is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographical data, personal designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze and display all form of geographically referenced information. 

Learning Outcomes

 Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Topographical survey of land
  • Preparation of contour maps and profiles of road, drain/channels
  • Principles and applications of Geographical Information system and remote sensing.
  • To define and illustrate the basic concepts of participatory approaches from both theoretical and practical perspectives.
  • Articulate how participatory methods can elicit peoples’ knowledge and expertise.
  • Describe how participatory methods build local capacity for effective problem solving and action.

Welcome to the learning unit "Post Harvest Handling and Storage. The learning unit is designed to be taught to Year 2 students in the department of Rural Development and Agricultural Economics. The main objective of the learning unit is to make the students aware of post harvest management of agricultural produce, explain technologies/procedures applied to improve quality and reduce losses of harvested produce and discuss quality attributes and standards required to maintain safety of harvested produce.
