This module aims at providing a general knowledge of geological processes appropriate to the needs of a geologist and a mining engineer, and to teach basic methods of geological analyses and also interpretation of simple geological data and maps through a combination of lectures, labs, and field observations.

The module aims to provide a brief introduction to the mining industry. This includes various subjects such as prospecting and exploration of minerals, sampling and evaluation, engineering aspects of mining and underground construction, drilling and blasting, mine opening and development, methods of shaft sinking, tunnelling, elements of rock mechanics and the support of mining excavations, transportation in mines, ventilation, elements of ore dressing and environmental impact assessment on mining projects.
