Trimester 2

During internship an undergraduate student has many chance of hands-on learning skills. An internship experience is extremely important in today's job market.An intern gains not only day-to-day work skills but also an understanding of the social and intellectual skills needed to manage the physical and human resources of commercial or public facilities.

Students may obtain work experience through employment in landscape design/ build firms, landscape management companies, production nurseries, Production of Crops, crop management, greenhouses management, flower or foliage production or product marketing firms, botanical gardens, laboratory works, harvest and post harvest handling, storage and  other related agricultural employment.

Objectives of the courses

The overall objective of the internship in Crop production/Horticulture program is to provide students with an opportunity to gain professional experience through an off-campus training program. It will also assist students in evaluating their own career objectives and to provide co-operators with an opportunity to evaluate the employment potential of the student intern.

 Course content

Internship has to be in the field of Horticulture/ crop production. During this internship, the students will carry out activities related to Horticulture/Crop Production, plant improvement, plant pests and diseases and other related activities. The student will work closely with the local supervisor and ensure enhancement in his knowledge and skills. 

Before the commencement of Internship, each student must be given a Log book which will be detailing all the activities done per day. The student and field supervisor must sign. Student need to participate in day to day activities of the selected institution either chosen by the institute or ones’ self.

The student will be encouraged to ensure that they gain experience in all the sections in the selected institution to broaden their knowledge and ability.

Learning outcomes

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

1. Report presentation

2. Industrial organizational and functioning

3. Principle of management in crop production/horticulture

Course image CPR4221: Agricultural Extension and Policies
Trimester 2

The module of Agricultural Extension and policies equip the students about the technology transfer skills and strategies; Rwandan agricultural policies laws; natural resources management low and policies; institutional framework for extension and human resources management practices in agricultural development. Students will be taught principles, concepts, philosophy, methods of extension  communication skills needed for agricultural innovations, interpersonal communication skills, Agricultural  & Natural Resources Management Policies & Laws as as well as the human resources management skills applied in agricultural context. Students are encouraged to attend lectures and field classes, if the situations permit. Course notes for lectures are made available through UR e-learning platform https://elearning.ur.ac.rw  Students are encouraged to participate in class by asking questions or providing appropriate comments from their own experiences that will add to the learning experience of all students. Students are expected to complete assignments on due time. Lectures are presented with the assistance of PPT slides. If time allows informal small groups will be used to discuss issues raised in class. The questions and comments from the students are highly encouraged.

Trimester 2

Dear Students, 

Welcome to  the module of Research project II, currently named thesis /memoir, final work

This module aims at guiding year 4 students  Crop Sciences in:

- lay out scientifically sound field and laboratory agronomic and soil science experiments

- record, analyse and report experimental data.

Learning Outcomes 

At the completion of the module, the student is expected to:

- understand the basics of field and laboratory experiment in agricultural crop production ; Different experimental designs and statistical analysis 

select experimental site; identify and choose data to be collected; to apply sound experimental design and analytical techniques to the research objects.

- record data according to the research purpose; perform analysis using most popular and common statistical softwares; interpret and report analytical results.

- be able to perform data collection and analysis
