This module explores the origin and rationale of the prohibition of genocide. Since genocide occurs mostly during armed conflict, this module analyses the law on the use of force in international law.It also analyses how international humanitarian law is enforced with regard to the violations of human rights during those armed conflicts and how international criminal law as a means of holding individuals account for grave human rights violations intervenes. Moreover, it also gives an overview on development, functioning and challenges of international criminal courts and tribunals. This includes how rules and principles of international criminal law have been interpreted and applied since Nuremberg until the recent developments.

This module focuses on the issue of the prevention of genocide. More specifically, it examines various methods and theories applied in the prevention of violence and genocide. It also discusses the role of education for peace in the prevention of genocide, the early warning systems and preventive diplomacy as it is used in the prevention of genocide.

This module aims at providing an understanding of the causes and mechanisms of violent conflict. It starts with an outline of the schools of thought on contemporary conflict analysis. This is followed by a presentation of the mechanisms of nationalism and how the dichotomisation between “Us” and “Them” can escalate into violence and war. It also addresses the relationship between gender, nationalism and violent conflict.
