Brief description of aims and content
This module aims at providing an understanding of the causes and mechanisms of violent conflict. It starts with an outline of the schools of thought on contemporary conflict analysis. This is followed by a presentation of the mechanisms of nationalism and how the dichotomisation between “Us” and “Them” can escalate into violence and war. It also addresses the relationship between gender, nationalism and violent conflict.

This module will provide students with theoretical amunitions regarding the trends of peace, conflict and development in a way that enables them engage in academic critical thinking and writing about peace, conflict and development perspectives.

This module will help students enrolled within the program of Peace and Development studies to get useful knowledge to conduct research in Social Science in general and on peace and conflict related matters in particular. During this module, students will be reminded both qualitative and quantitative methods applied to peace and conflict related areas.
