This module aims at teaching theories and concepts of international relations, its nature, and scope. It also analyses the contemporary state system, international organizations and their roles in the global system. The module also analyses the complex relationships within the international system.
Brief description of aims and content
This module provides an overview of security as an inter-disciplinary subject. It presents the historical development of the subject and the central theoretical perspectives - covering both mainstream theories and the various critiques against mainstream perspectives. The emphasis will be that security is critical for development and development is critical to security
The module presents different epistemological perspectives and the methodologies linked to the different approaches. It shows how research questions are chosen and formulated, and demonstrates the role of theory in guiding and directing the research process. Equally, the module addresses major ways of formulating the research problem, design of surveys, sampling process, methods of data collection and getting data ready for analysis. More critically, it focuses on the best way of presentation and dissemination of research findings and how to write the research reports.

This module is intended to teach the state of security in Africa from pre-colonial times up to contemporary periods. While it focuses on security, it includes also issues related to war, politics, and everyday life. Though related to Africa, it looks at theories at global level, and gives a substantial emphasis to Rwanda.
