Brief description of aims and content

 Financial governance issues are central to economic and political discourse worldwide, as one of the primary functions of government is to generate resources from its people to spend money improving the lives of its people. However, while the concept of “money from the people, for the people” is quite simple conceptually, there is little agreement on how best to raise and spend public funds in practice. Thus, the primary course objective is to provide students with the tools, and the skills to use these tools, to understand the underlying concepts and practical trade-offs entailed in public finance policy alternatives. This will prepare students to be informed consumers of public finance data, and thus, equip students to engage constructively in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of public finance policies. The aspect of developing financial skills and logical thought processes necessary to understand and discuss financial policy decisions are built in. The students will further understanding of the time value of money; using financial statements in decision making; and understanding the cost of capital, management of short-term assets, short-term and long-term financing, and multinational financial management. It addresses the impact of legal, social, technological, and ethical considerations on efficient economic outcomes.

  1. 1.       Brief description of aims and content

Local Economic development module integrates theoretical discussion with practical work in the areas of background to local economic development, principles and strategies for local economic development, institutional environment and governance structure, rural and urban agriculture and mechanism for measuring rural and urban agriculture in local economic development. The overall objective is to introduce to the students the concepts of economic development, strategic alignment of rural economics to national development agenda and enabling environment as a precondition for sustainable local economic development. The aforementioned will enable the graduate to determine the appropriate role of local governance and be able to assess the local economic development competitiveness

Course image LOG6211: LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

Brief description of aims and content

 The module of Local Infrastructure Planning and Management is about structural means which a nation must subscribe to for its long term survival. The staff are to adhere to governance rules on all levels with reference to planning. This module will equip prospective local government workers with the necessary knowledge and skills government, national and districts planning methods and the management phases. The dominant aspect the infrastructural plans that pivotal to economic and social development. 

Course image LOG6411: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Semester 2

This module will give Masters students in Local Government Studies a deeper understanding of the main methods of doing robust, scientific research. It will cover research theory, design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation. Masters students will become familiar with the process of conceptualizing, organizing and conducting their own research, as well as how to write up their research once they have their data.
