This  course generally introduces surveying and Geomatics to learners.  By the end of the module the learner should be able to:

  • Familiarize with surveying and Geomatics, including their relationship, basic principles and areas of applications
  • To ensure the proper application of principles, measurement techniques and instrumentation when carrying out survey tasks.
  • To improve Students’ communication skill, leadership and cooperative attitudes of work with others will be developed through group field practical.
  • Develop skills necessary to communicate technical information in a written format.
  •   Carry out chain surveying, ordinary levelling and  Taking care of surveying instruments

Semester I

The module introduces surveying and Geomatics to students of the Transportation Engineering Program .  By the end of the module the learner should be able to:

To Familiarize with surveying instruments

To Familiarize with surveying concepts including their relationship, basic principles and areas of applications

To ensure the proper application of principles, measurement techniques and instrumentation when carrying out survey tasks.

To improve Students’ communication skill, leadership and cooperative attitudes of work with others will be developed through group field practical.

To Develop skills necessary to communicate technical information in a written format.

Course image TRE1162 Mechanics of Materials
Semester I

The course aims to provide the basics of Mechanics of Materials as applied to Engineering practice.

The Mechanics of Materials course delivered here combines the essential of both Engineering Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics) and Strength of Materials previously delivered in the old Civil Engineering program. Therefore, both rigid bodies and deformable bodies are studied taking into account all necessary details..

This has three major parts: Statics, dynamics and strength of materials

The statics part covers the following topics: Force system in 1D, 2D & 3D, equilibrium of a particle and equilibrium of a force in 1D, 2D & 3D, truss analysis ( both methods of joints & sections), properties of areas (centre of gravity, centroid & moment of inertia), and friction.

The dynamics part covers the following topics: Rectilinear and curvelinear motions (in kinematics), equation of motion, angular momentum, work and energy, and impulse and momentum (in kinetics).

The strength of materials part covers the following topics: Mechanical properties of materials, simple stresses and strains, elastic constants, strain energy, geometrical properties of sections, compound stresses and strains, shear force and bending moment, bending stresses in beams, combined direct and bending stresses, deflection of beams, and torsion.

This course is the pre-request in any engineering field particularly in transportation engineering.
