This module builds on the knowledge students have already acquired on Database Design and Management that imparts the fundamentals of Database systems as well as provide a general understanding of Database Design Implementation. SQL forms the cornerstone of all relational database operations. The ability to write the SQL language is essential for those who develop database applications. This course provides a solid foundation of the SQL programming language that enables students to build, query and manipulate databases. Working in various DBMSs such as Oracle, students compare the ANSI/ISO standard with the SQL implementation of this database product.
This module covers the principles of database design and implementation including relational theory, database development, conceptual and logical modeling, and use of SQL as a Definition, Manipulation, Control, Procedural and Transaction Language. Practical knowledge in database design will be provided as preliminary. The module also provides practical skills in Client-Server and Web-enabled database application development with 4th generation languages like Java, Visual Basic 6/.Net, C#, Delphi and Others through connectivity standards like ODBC, JDBC, ADO .Net, DAO, RDO and others.
Brief Description of Aims & Content
The objective of this module is to prepare students to be part of teams that imagine, specify, design, justify, build, implement, manage and use information systems. To accomplish this objective, graduates must understand how to use information technology, including hardware, software, and telecommunications, as a conduit for the value-added information content of formal organizational systems. This understanding is based on a solid theoretical grounding in both technology and organizations, as well as on experience working both individually and in teams to apply the theory to practice.
By taking this module, students are prepared to be in position to attempt more advanced modules on the programme such as Enterprise Systems, Business Intelligence, etc.
