The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the principles of thermodynamics and molecular kinetic theory. Concepts such as work, heat, thermodynamics’ properties (temperature, volume, and pressure), heat capacity, laws of thermodynamics, and thermodynamics’ functions are introduced. The module also includes the microscopic description of an ideal gas. These concepts are illustrated by their application in various physical examples such as phase equilibrium and transitions, thermal engines. The module is completed by laboratory practicals on selected topics.

It is important for the students to interact with industry for them to understand the importance of this course in practical life. The module will end with a field visit at a specified place where students will have the opportunity to be exposed to situations illustrating what they have studied in class.
