Trim II

In this course the students will learn about properties of materials used in electrical installations and equipments. The students should be proficient in differentiating magnetically soft and magnetically hard materials by studying magnetic characteristics of materials, Dielectric and electrical properties of materials.

Module Objectives:

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to  demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Band structures for electron energies in aggregates of atoms and explain the concept of valence bands and conduction bands
  • conduction in semiconductors by both electrons and holes
  • polarization in materials and distinguish between ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials.
  • Paramagnetism, diamagnetism and ferromagnetism
  • magnetization and explain the terms remanance, coercivity and hysteresis
  • magnetically soft and magnetically hard materials and explain the main factors controlling the magnetic properties of a material.
