Dear student, welcome to the module Crop Process Engineering. This module is taught in Y4, semester 1, Agricultural Mechanisation Program. This module is divided into two learning units: Engineering properties of agricultural materials and Post harvest Technology of horticultural crops with 5 credits each. At the end of the module, students would possess in depth knowledge of  processing of horticultural crops for domestic and export market and Post Harvest Machinery. Increased shelf life of the produce and value addition.

Trimester 1

This Module Processing Technology has 15 Credits and comprised with three learning units: (1) Postharvest Technology for Horticultural Crops with 5 Credits, (2) Postharvest Technology and Processing of Cereals with 5 Credits and, (3) Dairy Technology with 5 credits. 

Aim of the module

Processing Technology Module is the study aiming at the following:

  1. Reduction of losses after harvesting of crops
  2. Value addition technology to increase the selling price and shelf life of agricultural produce.
  3. Exploring the possibilities of starting agro-industries.
Learning outcome

At the end of this Module, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the Principle and significance of Postharvest technology.
  2. Apply technology and techniques to enhance value addition to agricultural produce.
  3. Demonstrate skills and understanding of Dairy Technology

Unit 1: Postharvest Technology for Horticultural Crops
  1. Basic post-harvest handling and treatment
  2. Fruit Ripening and Ethylene in PHT
  3. Transport and Storage of Fruit and Vegetable
  4. Tea and coffee Processing Machinery

Unit 2: Postharvest Technology & Processing for Cereals

  1. Grain harvesting, Threshing, and threshers
  2. Winnowing and winnowers
  3. Ground nut decorticator and Maize shelling
  4. Grain drying Systems.
  5. Grain Storage Systems
  6. Conveying Agricultural Materials
  7. Size reduction
  8. Cereals Processing Technology
Unit 3: Dairy Technology
  1. Milk and Properties of different types of milk products.
  2. Milking machines, Scope, and use of different dairy products
  3. Preparation and preservation of milk products
  4. Dairy product and various unit operations
  5. Milk transportation equipment
  6. Packaging materials requirement and container development for dairy products.
  7. The layout of the milk and processing plant
