Topics covered include Professional conduct and work of a quantity surveyor other than measurement. Duties responsibilities and inter-relationship of personnel involved in design and production process.  The evolution and need for rules of professional conduct and practice; practice procedures for quantity surveyors; educational requirements and professional training and liability; principles of good practice for quantity surveyors in both private and public sector; professional organizations in building and construction industry and their status in Rwanda; the independent role of a quantity surveyor.

Quantity surveying organization and practice: education & training, professional & statutory regulation of the quantity surveying, office and staffing organization, private practice, public sector work, contracting, partnerships, advertising, appointment of quantity surveyors & their fees, rules of professional conduct, professional negligence and insurance;

Non-conventional roles of a quantity surveyor: development appraisal, heavy & process engineering, contracting & construction management,  project management, facilities management, life cycle costing, technical auditing and cost accounting, valuations for insurance, arbitration, grants, capital allowance & tax advice, insolvency services, facilities management; IT consultancy, quality assurance consultancy; funding advice; fire loss assessment, schedules of dilapidations.

Trimester 2

The module deals with all aspects of a construction project from inception to completion. There the core of the module deals with: Tendering, tender price, tender analysis and reporting, and post-contract pricing, uses of the various standard forms of contract agreements in building and civil engineering contractsDispute resolution (litigation, arbitration, adjudication, conciliation, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods), and Procedures of Closure of a Contract.

Trimester 2

The course builds on from the QUS4164 Research Project I module. Students continue to work on their dissertation under the guidance of departmental supervisors. Interim presentations are arranged by the department to assess students’ progress and allow for guidance as their research progresses

The course is a core for Bsc. Quantity Surveying Year 4 and is intended to cover the following.

Course image QUS4261 Measurement of Civil Engineering Works
Trimester 2

In this course, a detailed study of the civil engineering standard method of measurement (CESMM) is done. This includes measurement of preliminaries, earthworks, soil retaining structures,  concrete works, underpinning, tunneling, roads and bridges, dams, railway trunks, power generation, structural steel engineering works. Also included are Dayworks and consideration of civil engineering plant and equipment, and preparation of civil engineering tender documents.
