Trimester 1

The module aims at providing students with the knowledge of analyzing financial statements of various business firms; review and assess financial information to help them understand a firm’s Past financial strengths and weaknesses, which will lead to appropriate financial decisions for proper financial planning. Therefore, the module will include tools and techniques of analysis and interpreting financial information reported in the firm’s financial statements.

Trimester 1

  Brief description of aims and content

This module it aims at exposing students:

  1. To contemporary issues in the domain of industrial economics with special attention to Africa.
  2. To show that there are complexities in our understanding of the relevant market for competition purposes and that there are a number of competing perspectives in industrial economic which make public policy decisions problematic.
  3. To introduce students to economic theories used in the analysis of industries;
  4. To evaluate these theories in view of empirical evidence;
  5. To describe policy implications of these theories and their empirical evaluation.

  3. Identify and analyze elements of industrial  structure  and industrial concentration

  6. Apply core economic theory and economic reasoning to applied topics.
  7. Show understanding of analytical methods, both theory- and model-based.

Trimester 1

Human Development  EconomicsTheory has roots in ancient philosophy and early economic theory. Aristotle noted that "Wealth is evidently not the good we are seeking, for it is merely useful for something else", and Adam Smith and Karl Marx were concerned with human capabilities. The theory grew in importance in the 1980s with the work of Amartya Sen and his Human Capabilities perspective, which played a role in his receiving the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics. Notable early active economists who formulated the modern concept of human development theory were Mahbub ul HaqÜner Kirdar, and Amartya Sen.

  1. Description/Aims of the Module
    1. To introduce to key theories and debates in rural Economics.
    2. To outline the main opportunities and constraints relating to the development of rural economies and the reduction of rural poverty.
    3. To explore the contributions of different policies, sectors, services and actors to the process of rural development.
    4. To examine how the management of natural resources affects rural development outcomes.
  2. Learning outcomes   2.1 Knowledge and Understanding:

    By the end of this module, students should be able to:

    1. Explain and critically review current debates in rural development regarding rural livelihoods and the respective roles of markets, the state, institutions, property rights, agriculture and the rural non-farm economy.
    2. Critically evaluate past and existing attempts to supply rural services, such as infrastructure, finance, research and extension, health and education.
    3. Analyse critically alternative rural development policies in terms of their potential impact on rural poverty, equity and economic growth, taking account of different regional and geographical circumstances.
    4. Outline and evaluate different approaches to the management of land and water resources and their potential impact on rural development goals.

    1. To get a clear picture of the dimensions and aspects of development projects.

    b)    To broaden the student’s knowledge of Project Management so that he/she is able to relate to a real business situation.

    c)    To know how to efficiently manage development projects as well as how to analyze the data in the context of planning development projects in the country.

    d)    To analyze investment projects

    e)    To help students develop self-awareness of the technical and business abilities they need to develop and survive in business.

    f) To know what critical path means in relation to the types of project

    g)    To enhance the technical and management aspects associated with effectively managing projects.
