The module of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Medicines Analysis is a 15 credit module constituted of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Medicines Analysis components. The two components have equal weight. The pharmaceutical Chemistry component focuses on the study of chemical properties of organic and inorganic medicines as well as radiopharmaceutical preparations and diagnostic agents. The study of organic products has an emphasis on their structure-activity relationships. On this aspect, the course is closely aligned with the pharmacology module. The Medicines Analysis component of this module focuses on the methods and techniques used to analyze and test the quality of medicines.
This module provides an in-depth review of the new approaches to advanced medicine manufacture with particular emphasis on the novel materials used in medicine and delivery system design. The module deals with special formulations and quality assurance in medicine delivery including pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic considerations in medicine delivery, biomaterials and targeted and controlled release medicine delivery, intrapulmonary delivery and respiratory disorders, dermal and transdermal delivery and skin disorders, parenteral delivery and oncology and infectious diseases, ocular, nasal and otic delivery and ophthalmic diseases. The module describes also the unit processing of cosmetics
This module covers a deep study of principles of medicine action and the relevance for clinical use. Lectures will address major disease processes in each organic system and the therapeutic properties of medicines used to treat them. This module also emphasizes on the study of the toxicological concerns including medicine adverse reactions, the toxicity occurring as a result of metabolism, carcinogenicity. Basic laboratory techniques used in experimental pharmacology and toxicology constitute the practical part.
The module has a total of 14 topics including 9 topics for Pharmacology and 5 topics for Toxicology.
