Welcome to Introduction Law module. This module introduces first year law students to the basic elements and principles of Rwandan law.
This module is an Introduction to Legal philosophy. it aims at understanding the legal doctrines and the legal reasoning at the root of rule of law and legal systems in which laws function. The mudule comprises three components. The first contains an Introduction to philosophy. The second is Introduction to legal philosophy and the last is an Introduction to Formal logic.
This module is known as Constitutional Law and Political Institutions but most of the time we shorten it as “Constitutional Law”. It is a module of 15 credits all together and will normally be taught in about one month. The general prerequisites for this module are the basic general knowledge on the theory of constitutionalism in general; we talk about Constitutional Law in countries such as United Kingdom, France and United States of America.
Welcome to the Module of Family Law!
The Module of Family Law aims to introduce the students to the complex legal rules governing persons and family with a view to guiding them on how to develop independent and critical thinking, and the ability to formulate legal arguments and solve legal issues related to persons and family. It therefore provide students with a critical and comprehensive appreciation of the main features of Rwandan law governing persons and family.
It has two components: the First component treats the essential legal aspects of the person from birth until death. It first precises the notion of legal personality, how it begins and ends and what it entails. It also examines how persons can be individualized, identified or distinguished from others, and studies the status and capacity of a person from a legal perspective. The Second component of the Family Law Module studies the person as a member of the family. It examines family relationship aspects namely kinship and alliance and their legal impacts. It analyses the marriage contract, its conditions of validity and legal consequences, its dissolution by divorce and legal separation and their legal consequences. The second component lastly explores legitimate filiation and establishment of filiation for children born out of wedlock and attached legal consequences.
Aim of the Module
General Criminal Law Module aims at introducing students with the and principles rules applicable to all crimes in general. It covers subjects such as the principle of legality, elements of the crime, criminal liability, defenses, inchoate offences and sentencing. The assessment of this module consists of formative assessment (50% ) and summative assessment (50% for a final exam). E-tivities, Assignments, quizes and final exams and will assess the knowledge, different skills ( communication and analytical skills) and personal qualities.
