Trimester 1
Aim of the Module

This module provides an overview of the basic principles of pharmacology including the pharmacogenesis, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. It also emphasizes knowledge about drugs, their classification, therapeutic effects, anticipated reactions, toxic effects, and abuse.

Module brief description 

The  module is designed to introduce the application of concepts to patient care situations, including patient assessment, drug dosage calculations and administration, patient and family teaching and documentation of patient responses to specific medications are described. Major emphasis will be placed on nursing management practices that minimize adverse effects and maximize therapeutic effects for patients

Intended learning outcomes
  1. Identify the essential drugs, their therapeutic and side effects on human body.
  2. Explain the collect measures to ensure the prevention of medication errors.
  3. Utilize critical thinking in administering drugs to different group ages of patients.
  4.  Consider pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics factors in drug therapy.
  5. Utilize the nursing process and the five concepts of human functioning to assess appropriate/inappropriate response to therapy.
  6. Anticipate and react appropriately to the adverse effects of drugs and drug events, namely side effects, toxic effects (poisoning), hypersensitivity and drug dependency.
  7. Orient the patient on the prescribed medication
  8. Communicate and document drug reactions according to the available communication tools.

Trimester 1

This module equips learners with knowledge of nursing in the community, covering the clients' home, schools and health centers and other health and social work agencies. It introduces the learners to the concepts used in community health nursing. The legal and theoritical frameworks guiding community health nursing practice, and the functioning of the health-care system in the country. The module prepare the learner for school health nursing, disaster management, home-care, forensic health, and health in the workplace and correctional services. Emphasis is placed on primary health care health promotion and disease prevention.
