Course image MDW4153: Advanced Midwifery
SEMESTER I

Module Description
This module will enable experienced midwives to develop the skills of independent thinking required for advanced midwifery practice. It will also encourage midwives to further develop and enhance the existing knowledge and skills, both by exploring how to promote normality during childbirth and how to care for vulnerable women with complex needs. Emphasis will be put on conditions typically addressed in community-based setting and on nursing care management.

SEMESTER I

Welcome to the Research and Innovations in Midwifery module!

The purpose of this module is to provide an introduction and overview of research methodology. Nurses and midwifes not only need to use evidence to guide their practice in clinical, administration, and academic positions, but also need to participate in the extension of knowledge and theory development.

 

This module will explore quantitative and qualitative approaches to examining a problem and finding answers to dilemmas through research methodology. Topics that will be discussed in the course include: (a) how to select the best research method for the problem under study, (b) the purpose of a literature review, (c) ethical considerations for all research, and (d) what types of data collection tools and analytic principles should be employed.

SEMESTER I

This module provides the student with knowledge, skills and attitude on midwifery as a science, an art, and a profession.  It has historical, philosophical, ethical and legal aspects of midwifery practice, contemporary issues facing midwifery, and the influence of societal trends on midwifery practice and the health care delivery system.  It examines the current trends and issues which influence the midwifery profession and delivery of health care. The module relates the concepts and theories to their use in problem solving and the midwifery process, and the application of these principles and theories in related settings.
