STANLEY, A DEMOGRAPHER STATISTICIAN, AND LECTURER OF POPULATION DYNAMICS AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE APPLIED STATISTICS DEPARTMENT. AT THE END OF THIS MODULE, STUDENTS SHOULD CLEARLY UNDERSTAND DEMOGRAPHIC ISSUES EMBEDDED IN THE MAIN THEORIES, CONCEPTS, AND PRINCIPLES. POPULATION IS ALWAYS CHANGING. YOU CAN STUDY THE EFFECTS OF BOTH NATURAL CHANGE FROM BIRTH AND DEATH AND MIGRATION. 

THIS CHANGE HAS IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS SO COUNTRIES TRY TO MANAGE BOTH POPULATION AND MIGRATION THROUGH GOVERNMENT POLICIES.

Trimester 1

The module introduces students to the basic techniques of formal (statistical) demographic analysis. All demographic sub-fields will be covered at a basic level: marriage, fertility, mortality, population growth, migration, as well techniques and purpose of standardization and evaluation of data.

The module aims also at familiarizing students to theories of the interrelationship between population, resources and development as well as to the complexities of interdisciplinary nature of population and economic development, and to population policies.

This module aims at imparting students: (i) a sound foundation in sample survey design, data collection and practical data analysis, (ii) Practical knowledge of probability sampling and non-probability sampling techniques, (iii) Knowledge of fundamental designs of experiments.
