Course image AST3332: Principles of Actuarial Models: Financial Economics
Trimester 3

This module aims to develop the student's knowledge of the theoretical basis of certain actuarial models and the application of those models to insurance and other financial risks and provide an understanding of basic theories in Financial Mathematics used in the study process of actuarial/financial interest. We will mainly cover the chapters related to the interest rate models, valuation of derivative securities, the mathematical and probabilistic foundation of risk management. Every chapter is supposed to be delivered every week along with scheduled assignments and exercises. The mode of general assessment can be found on the attachment of the complete module description including reading materials/references.

  1. Learning outcomes:

This module:

-enables students to understand, describe and analyze sexual and reproductive health issues and related health promotion programs in low and middle income countries

-provides a sound foundation in the theory about local and global challenges relating to the social, political and economic context influencing sexual and reproductive health.

1.  Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  1. To understand the issues related to sexual and reproductive health
  2. Explain central concepts in sexual and reproductive health issues in low and middle income countries
  3. Appraise the efficacy of current programs and public health strategies/policies addressing reproductive, maternal and Child Heath internationally.

2.  Cognitive/Intellectual skills/application of knowledge

  1. Establish the relationship between maternal health, family planning, HIV/AIDS, STIs, and other infections, gender, and social/political/economic factors
    1. Understanding the relationship between pregnancy spacing, contraceptive use, reproductive rights, poverty and other suitable factors in enhancing sexual and reproductive health.
    2. Compare sexual and reproductive health outcomes in developed and developing countries

 3.  Communication/Analytical techniques/Practical skills

  1. Acquire knowledge related to information, education and communication skills relating to sexual and reproductive health.
  2. Ability to formulate a suitable reproductive health policy incorporating different factors related to reproductive health behaviour.

 2. Indicative Content

Unit 1. Introduction to SRH and Maternal health: Concepts and history SRH, Epidemiology in SRH (Context-dependent variations), maternal mortality & morbidity, Maternal and neonatal health (global overview, RH Quality of Care).

 Unit 2.Family planning programs: Background: Concept and types of FP, Existing policies and programs on Family Planning and abortion, Adolescent and family planning

 Unit 3.Infections and reproductive health: Concepts and Types of major SRH infections, Existing policies, programs and challenges in the intersection between infections and RH (PMTCT, VCT, PICT, CTC etc.), Malaria in pregnancy, STIs (HPV, Syphilis) and other infections (schistosomiasis, STH) and SRH.

 Unit 4.Gender and reproductive health: Gender, culture and masculinity in RH, Fistula, care and gender, Female circumcision, Gender-based violence, Infertility

 Unit 5.Social, political and economic issues surrounding reproductive health: Politics of RH and AIDS- the global perspective, Existing national programs and challenges in a social, political and economic context (adolescent health, HIV prevention, gender violence, abortion, fistula, reproductive cancers)

 Unit 6.Contemporary Issues on Sexual and Reproductive Rights: Introduction to reproductive rights, Education and Access to Information in the Context of Contraception, Advocacy and the Role of civil societies in the Promotion and Protection of Sexual and Reproductive Rights.
